Pirro to replace injured Spies at Jerez
25 April 2013 – Pramac rider Ben Spies will miss the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez to aid the healing of multiple injuries, with Ducati tester Michele Pirro being called up as his replacement.
Spies, who joined Pramac from the factory Yamaha squad, has been struggling to recover from a series of injuries he sustained during last year's Malaysian Grand Prix, in which the American suffered a fractured rib and separated his right shoulder.
Having missed the final two races of the 2012 season, the 28-year-old made his return during the Sepang pre-season test, but another fall led to him experiencing considerable pain throughout the opening two race weekends at Sepang and Austin.
Stand-in Pirro contested his debut MotoGP campaign in 2012 before moving to Ducati as its test rider, with the Italian set for a total of three wildcard entires this season.
