Lorenzo provides Misano masterclass
15 September 2013 – Jorge Lorenzo dominated the San Marino Grand Prix at Misano on Sunday, gaining the lead into the first corner and pulling away from his rivals thereafter. Pole-sitter Marc Márquez took second after a titanic battle with team-mate Dani Pedrosa.
Although Márquez had topped all bar one of the sessions on Friday and Saturday, the Repsol Honda rider failed to find the pace to match Yamaha rival Lorenzo on race day, with the reigning World Champion easing to a comfortable victory.
Márquez lost out to Pedrosa at the start, and it was clear he was being held up after only a few corners. As a result, Lorenzo's lead was already up to 1.1 seconds at the end of the first tour; a gap he gradually extended throughout the 28-lap race.
Márquez briefly fell back to fourth behind Valentino Rossi after a failed late-braking manoeuvre on his team-mate, but dispatched the Italian a few laps later to reclaim the podium position. Pedrosa proved a more difficult hurdle to surmount, but the rookie lined up his team-mate at Turn 2 and made the pass. The duo exchanged positions a few more times, with the battle allowing Lorenzo to move even further clear.
The untouchable Lorenzo eventually crossed the line three seconds clear after backing off in the closing laps, even affording a few waves to the crowd in the final corners. Rossi took a lonely fourth behind Márquez and Pedrosa, while a race-long battle for fifth between Cal Crutchlow and Stefan Bradl was only settled on the last lap, with the German emerging victorious. Álvaro Bautista took seventh, ahead of the Ducati's of Andrea Dovizioso and Nicky Hayden. Michele Pirro completed the top ten.
Despite Lorenzo claiming his second successive triumph, Márquez's second place means that the 20-year-old extends his lead in the championship to 34 points with five races remaining. Lorenzo has drawn level with Pedrosa for second, while Rossi and Crutchlow are the only other riders that can mathematically still clinch the title.
The MotoGP season continues at MotorLand Aragón from September 27-29
