Espargaró crashes out in FR3.5 test
5 November 2013 – Moto2 champion Pol Espargaró got to sample a Formula Renault 3.5 Series car this week at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya, although unfortunately his day ended early when he put it into the barriers.
Espargaró, who will step up to MotoGP next season, was handed the opportunity to drive the car by Pons Racing as a reward for claiming the Moto2 crown this year.
“It was great!” he said, “a totally different experience from riding bikes and a fantastic feeling. The World Series by Renault car is really incredible. I was impressed with the power, the handling and the brakes, which are phenomenal
“The few laps I drove really gave me a thrill, and also the awareness that to drive properly such a sophisticated machine, one needs some training and preparation, which I didn’t have.
“Unfortunately, I gave to much throttle in the corner before the chicane, losing the car and hitting the barrier."
“Still, it was a great day for me and I thank Pons Racing for the opportunity. I always enjoyed cars and who know, one day when I’ll be much older and out of bike racing, I may consider four-wheel racing,” he added.
