Márquez tops first test day of 2014
4 February 2014 – Reigning MotoGP World Champion Marc Márquez got his title defence underway by topping the timesheets on the first day of the opening pre-season test at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia.
The Repsol Honda rider, who spent the early part of Tuesday's running trading times with Yamaha rival Valentino Rossi, delivered a late effort of 2:00.286 to usurp the Italian and finish more than half a second clear.
Márquez's team-mate, Dani Pedrosa, took third, narrowly ahead of two-time title winner Jorge Lorenzo, while satellite Honda riders Álvaro Bautista, of Gresini, and Stefan Bradl, of LCR, completed the top six.
Aleix Espargaró ended the day an encouraging seventh as the Forward Racing squad began its journey on Yamaha Open class machinery, with team-mate Colin Edwards backing him up in 11th position.
Pramac's Andrea Ianonne and Tech 3 duo Pol Espargaró and Bradley Smith rounded out the top ten.
The factory Ducatis of Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow featured back in 12th and 14th respectively, with dedicated test rider Michele Pirro splitting the pair.
Pre-season testing continues at the Sepang International Circuit on Wednesday morning
