Lorenzo distracted by mosquitoes at start
14 April 2014 – Jorge Lorenzo says mosquitoes played a key role in his jump-start at the Grand Prix of the Americas.
The Yamaha rider jumped forward well before the red lights went out and, having realised his mistake, chose to continue and await a certain ride-through penalty, which he duly served at the end of the opening lap.
"When I arrived to the grid for the start I had too many mosquitoes on my helmet, so I decided to take the tear-off off and this confused me a lot. I was not thinking or being focused." Lorenzo told the official MotoGP website.
"When I saw the red light [switch on above], I thought it was the race start so I released the clutch and I made a jump-start. It was a big, big mistake. It was one of the hugest mistakes I've made in my career."
Lorenzo recovered to finish the race in 10th position and record his first points of the campaign.
