Espargaró heads first Jerez MotoGP practice
2 May 2014 – Aleix Espargaró was quickest in opening practice as MotoGP returned to Europe for the Gran Premio de España at Jerez.
Espargaró, who is eighth in the standings, set his quickest time near the end of the session, posting a 1:39.357 to put his NGM Forward Racing Yamaha 0.357 seconds up on Jorge Lorenzo.
Reigning MotoGP Champion and winner of the first three rounds, Marc Márquez was third for the Repsol Honda Team, 0.135 seconds further back, while team-mate Dani Pedrosa and Yamaha's Valentino Rossi rounded out the top-five.
Álvaro Bautista concluded the session in sixth, ahead of Andrea Dovizioso – the lead Ducati, Stefan Bradl, Yonny Hernández and Bradley Smith in positions seven through to ten.
Pramac's Andrea Ianonne crashed out late on at Turn Five, but escaped injury, ending proceedings in 12th.
Cal Crutchlow on his return after injury forced him to miss last weekend's event in Argentina was 18th, one spot ahead of fellow Brit, Scott Redding.
Michael Laverty was 22nd and slowest for PBM.
Second practice at Jerez now begins at 2.15pm local time.
