Lorenzo sets late lap to beat Márquez in practice
17 May 2014 – Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo sprung a surprise during the third free practice session ahead of this weekend's French Grand Prix by posting the quickest lap in the final minute of running.
Lorenzo had been sitting in the lower half of the top 10 for much of the 45 minute session but set a lap right at the end of running to eclipse championship leader Marc Márquez by 0.024s.
Pol Espargaró was third quickest for Tech 3, ahead of Álvaro Bautista and Valentino Rossi.
Stefan Bradl was sixth fastest while Dani Pedrosa, Bradley Smith, Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone rounded out the top 10.
The aforementioned riders all consequently secured automatic progression through to Q2, which means that the remaining runners – including Aleix Espargaró and Ducati's Cal Crutchlow – will have to battle in Q1.
Qualifying begins at 14:10 local time (GMT + 2)
