Márquez beats Iannone to Mugello pole
31 May 2014 – Marc Márquez claimed his seventh pole position in a row as he continued his perfect start to the 2014 MotoGP season in Italy.
Márquez set a time of 1:47.270 to beat surprise contender Andrea Iannone by 0.180s.
Márquez set a couple of times good enough for pole position but it was Iannone who caused a shock as he set strong sector times before receiving a slipstream from Valentino Rossi along the long pits straight.
Jorge Lorenzo set the early pace but was quickly usurped by Márquez and will start from the outside of the front row.
Dani Pedrosa was quick in practice but found himself languishing in the lower reaches of the top 10 during Q2 before a late lap hauled him up to fourth on the grid.
Pol Espargaró set a time good enough for fifth before he crashed out of the session, ahead of British duo Cal Crutchlow and Bradley Smith.
Andrea Dovizioso was eighth for Ducati, while Stefan Bradl and home hero Rossi rounded out the top 10.
Álvaro Bautista and Aleix Espargaró both progressed from Q1 but completed the runners in the final segment of qualifying.
Yonny Hernández came within a few tenths of making it through to Q2 but he was eventually eliminated and will start from 13th on the grid, ahead of Scott Redding.
Ducati wildcard rider Michele Pirro set a couple of rapid sector times but couldn't maintain his pace across the duration of the lap and ended up in 15th.
Karel Abraham was 16th, ahead of Hiroshi Aoyama and Colin Edwards. Héctor Barberá will start from 19th, with Michael Laverty, Mike Di Meglio and Broc Parkes in close proximity.
Michel Fabrizio will round out the grid for Ioda; the Italian is replacing the injured Danilo Petrucci and was only called up at the last minute.
Nicky Hayden will not participate in the race after withdrawing following Friday's practice sessions. The American has been plagued by wrist pain and will undergo surgery on Tuesday.
