Espargaró on top in first Barcelona practice
13 June 2014 – Aleix Espargaró comfortably set the standard during Friday morning's first practice session for the Catalunya Grand Prix.
With the assistance of a Soft rear tyre compound, the Forward Racing rider delivered a 1:41.672 in the closing stages, putting him seven tenths clear of nearest rival and factory Yamaha man Jorge Lorenzo.
Pramac's Andrea Iannone ended the session as the third fastest rider, despite suffering a crash at the Turn 10 hairpin after braking too late.
Valentino Rossi was fourth on the second of the works Yamahas, just ahead of LCR rider Stefan Bradl and the Repsol Hondas of Dani Pedrosa and Marc Márquez.
Gresini's Álvaro Bautista, Pramac's Yonny Hernández and Tech 3's Pol Espargaró completed the top ten.
Aspar's Nicky Hayden completed a healthy number of laps as he assessed his wrist after recent surgery. Ioda rider Danilo Petrucci had intended to do the same, but withdrew yesterday to be replaced by Michel Fabrizio.
