Smith edges out Bradl in second practice
13 June 2014 – Tech 3's Bradley Smith led the field during second practice at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Friday, posting a 1:42.123 to edge out LCR rival Stefan Bradl by seven thousandths of a second.
Smith assumed the top spot with just five minutes remaining in the 45-minute session, after classifying 13th in the day's first outing.
Jorge Lorenzo set the early pace, before being eclipsed by Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi and the aforementioned Bradl, both of whom spent time in P1. Rossi would ultimately finish the session in sixth.
Reigning World Champion Marc Márquez went quickest halfway through the session, but the Repsol Honda man would finish 0.151s behind Smith's time, leaving him third. He was one of a handful of riders to better his time from the first practice session, but no one was quicker than Aleix Espargaró's FP1 effort of 1:41.672.
The aforementioned Lorenzo ended his session in fourth position – another strong showing after finishing second to Espargaró in the first practice. Espargaró would finish 12th while his brother, Pol, wound up fifth.
Andrea Dovizioso followed, while Yonny Hernández, Andrea Iannone and Dani Pedrosa rounded out the top ten.
American Nicky Hayden continued to practice on his Honda and assess his injured wrist, finishing 17th.
Saturday morning's third practice session in Barcelona gets underway at 9.55am local time (GMT +2)
