Record lap puts Aleix Espargaró on top
26 June 2014 – Aleix Espargaró topped the timesheets in Thursday's second practice session at Assen, breaking the lap record in the process.
The Forward Racing rider, running Soft rear tyres, set a 1:33.653 in the closing stages to eclipse Casey Stoner's best effort from 2012.
Marc Márquez, who held a massive rear wheel slide at full lean early in the session, was the first rider to break into the 1m33s bracket, but he slipped to second when Espargaró switched to the softer rubber late on.
Dani Pedrosa backed up his Repsol Honda team-mate in third, with Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo taking fourth.
Pramac's Andrea Iannone was the fastest of the Ducati runners in fifth position, just ahead of Tech 3 rider Bradley Smith and the remaining works Yamaha of Valentino Rossi, who posted identical lap times.
Although he beat his pace-setting time from first practice, Pol Espargaró could only place eighth.
LCR's Stefan Bradl and factory Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso completed the top ten positions.
Friday's third practice session at Assen gets underway at 9.55am local time (GMT +2)
