Espargaró 'lucky' to claim Assen pole position
27 June 2014 – Aleix Espargaró says he feels lucky to have claimed pole position for the Dutch TT, after a dramatic rain-hit qualifying session at Assen.
Forward Racing's Espargaró took advantage of the Soft tyres to battle early spits of rain and rise to the front of the field, before conditions deteriorated further and put an end to his rivals' hopes of improving.
"I'm really happy," said Espargaró. "I've been waiting for my first pole since [the opening round in] Qatar!
"I let everybody go at the start to find a good space on the track, because I was close to 11 other riders. I was lucky to get one free lap and then really lucky because it continued raining and nobody could improve their time."
Although he admits that winning is an unrealistic prospect, Espargaró is hopeful of putting up a fight in the race.
"I think tomorrow's race will be fun, because I have really good pace," added Espargaró, who will share the front row of the grid with the factory Honda bikes of reigning World Champion Marc Márquez and Dani Pedrosa.
"I think I can stay with the top guys for at least a couple of laps. That would be really good for us."
