Márquez tops opening Silverstone practice
29 August 2014 – Marc Márquez set the pace during Friday morning's opening practice session for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
After some early spots of rain cleared, the Repsol Honda rider worked his way down to a 2:03.208, six tenths faster than Pramac's Andrea Iannone.
Andrea Dovizioso classified third on his works Ducati, while Gresini's Álvaro Bautista was the last rider to get within a second of Márquez.
Forward Racing's Aleix Espargaró and outgoing LCR rider Stefan Bradl followed in fifth and sixth places respectively, just ahead of factory Yamaha team-mates Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi.
The remaining Pramac and Repsol Honda bikes of Yonny Hernández and Dani Pedrosa completed the top 10.
Tech 3's Bradley Smith was the fastest home rider in 11th, ahead of Ducati's Cal Crutchlow (13th), Gresini's Scott Redding (14th), Aspar's Leon Camier (19th) and Paul Bird's Michael Laverty, who was the only man unable to get within 107 per cent of Márquez's time after returning to the pits with smoke pouring from his exhaust pipe.
Friday's second practice session at Silverstone gets underway at 14:05 local time (GMT +1)
