Dovizioso tops second practice for Ducati
11 August 2017 – Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso produced a rapid late effort to lead Friday afternoon's second practice session for the Austrian Grand Prix.
Dovizioso, who set the pace in FP1 before losing his best time over track limits, found a quarter of a second on his final run, moving to the front with a 1:24.046.
Several riders spent phases on top through the 45 minutes of action, as the track surface quickly dried up following rain showers between sessions.
Yamaha's Maverick Viñales swapped bikes in the closing stages en route to second, 0.234s down on Dovizioso, with Dani Pedrosa leading Honda's charge, half a second back.
Johann Zarco finished fourth for Tech 3 Yamaha, followed by the other works Ducati and Honda bikes of Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Márquez.
LCR Honda's Cal Crutchlow kept his place inside the top 10, which was completed by Aprilia's Aleix Espargaró, Pramac's Scott Redding and Aspar's Álvaro Bautista.
Redding survived an early off at Turn 4, as he ran through the gravel and brushed an air fence, before Márquez experienced a similar moment.
After a flurry of late times, the top nine riders in FP2 hold automatic Q2 spots, with the other place currently going to FP1 pace-setter Héctor Barberá, who did not improve in 17th.
Saturday's third practice session in Spielberg will begin at 09:55 local time
