Wickens secures pole at Silverstone
20 August 2011 – Carlin’s Robert Wickens will start from pole position at Silverstone later this afternoon, outpacing his rivals in the first qualifying session of the weekend. The Canadian posted a time of 1:45.015 to beat second place man Alexander Rossi by almost four tenths of a second, while HRT F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo completed the top three.
The Formula Renault 3.5 drivers were raring to go following a break of more than six weeks, with Wickens quick to apply pressure on championship leader Jean-Eric Vergne as a result of his performance this morning. France's Nathanaël Berthon was best of the rest behind ISR team-mate Ricciardo, settling for fourth in front of Brendon Hartley.
Albert Costa was next up in sixth place, just ahead of GP3 regular Nick Yelloly who delivered an impressive performance on his series debut. Vergne had to settle for the final top eight spot, enduring a relatively unsuccessful session in Northamptonshire.
Race 1 begins at 1pm local time (BST)
