Carlin driver Robert Wickens claimed pole position for the second race of the weekend at Silverstone, posting a time of 1:45.379 to secure the top spot once again during a hard-fought qualifying session. The Canadian led team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne by just under three tenths of a second, while Nathanael Berthon completed the top three.

Wickens overcame traffic issues en route to the circuit to claim this morning’s pole, jumping ahead of erstwhile leader Alexander Rossi during the final few minutes of the session. Vergne and Berthon also managed to move ahead of Rossi before the chequered flag, with Daniel Ricciardo and Albert Costa following suit soon after.

Brendon Hartley recovered from his grid penalty yesterday to set the seventh fastest time behind Rossi, with Kevin Korjus following closely in the highest placed Tech 1 machine. Jake Rosenzweig was next up in ninth place, while Brazil’s Cesar Ramos rounded out the top ten. Britain’s Nick Yelloly could only manage 15th this time out, having been disqualified from his Formula Renault 3.5 debut due to a fuel infringement.

Race 2 begins at 1pm local time (BST)
