Robert Wickens will start the opening Formula Renault 3.5 race of the weekend from pole position at the Circuit de Catalunya, having outpaced his rivals in this morning’s all-important qualifying session. The Canadian and championship leader lines up ahead of Spain's Albert Costa, with Alexander Rossi completing the top three runners.
"It was a kind of bizarre session," explained Wickens. "I had enough time to get out of the car and talk to the team! The oil on the track made things more difficult in the second part and almost nobody improved. My car was perfect. With my pole and Jean-Eric’s ninth place I’m in a good position. But it’s not over yet."
Heading into the weekend with a slender lead in the title race, Wickens gave his hopes a big boost by placing his car nine spots a whole four rows ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne. Behind third place man Rossi, the latter's compatriot Jake Rosenzweig trailed narrowly, with Daniil Move and Sergio Canamasas completing the top six positions.
Britain's Nick Yelloly wound up seventh ahead of Pons team-mate Oli Webb, with Jean-Eric Vergne and Nelson Panciatici rounding out the top ten positions.
Race 1 begins at 3pm local time (BST +1)
