Nigel Melker will join the Formula Renault 3.5 grid with Tech 1 this season, moving over from the GP2 Series. The 21-year-old Dutchman, who explained that budget was the main reason for his switch, is targeting the title in his maiden campaign and believes the French outfit will provide him with the best chance of doing so.
"I was in contact with teams such as Fortec and Lotus, but when I visited the Tech 1 factory in Toulouse there was an immediate click," Melker told GPUpdate.net. "I had endless discussions with the engineers and team bosses about everything and I think if you can talk to each other so well, there is a good basis to build upon."
Melker went on to explain that he expects a tough challenge in his quest for the title, pin-pointing António Félix da Costa and Kevin Magnussen as his main rivals.
"My goal for this year is of course to become champion, but winning a title is never easy," Melker began to sum up. "A top-three finish in the championship is definitely on the cards though. It promises to be a good battle between the three of us."
Melker made a strong one-round Formula Renault 3.5 appearance for Lotus in 2012, picking up a podium finish during the tenth race of the campaign at Silverstone.
