Sainz Jr pleased after moving into championship lead
28 April 2014 – Red Bull junior driver Carlos Sainz Jr expressed his satisfaction after moving into the overall lead of the Formula Renault 3.5 Series after a win and a fourth place at Motorland Aragón in Spain.
Sainz Jr arrived at the circuit jointly leading the championship but moved 13 points clear of nearest rival Oliver Rowland ahead of the next round in Monaco at the end of May.
"We can certainly qualify that as another good weekend," he said. "[Saturday was] a perfect day; pole, the win and fastest lap at my home race, so it doesn't get much better. [Sunday] was very different but still very good."
While Sainz Jr romped to his second successive win on Saturday, he finished only fourth on Sunday after qualifying in fifth place.
"Unfortunately the launch control failed and my start was so bad, it was like I was leaving the pits, I lost a lot of place [Will] Stevens was holding us up but I just couldn't get past. [Pierre] Gasly caught us, he was also faster than Stevens so I was having to defend from him through sector two. Then Stevens braked even earlier, I locked up and went to my right to miss him and Gasly got past. We looked at the telemetry and I wasn't braking late, he was just so early."
"That flat spotted a front and I couldn't get back past so it wasn't the perfect end to the weekend. If you just look at P4 then it is a bit disappointing but if you look at the problems at the start it was still a pretty great result, certainly wonderful to be leading the championship and have two wins in the bag."
