1 June 2014 – Carlos Sainz Jr completed a perfect weekend by converting his second pole position into his second victory in race two of the Formula Renault 3.5 Series at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium on Sunday.
The DAMS racer looked set to be challenged by Oliver Rowland until the Briton stalled during the mandatory pit stops and lost over 10 seconds.
That left Sainz Jr free to take a comfortable double, finishing 12.3 seconds up on Strakka's Will Stevens, with Richie Stanaway crossing the line in third, but later slipping back as he picked up a 20-second penalty for pitting outside of the allowed window. That dropped him to eighth, and promoted Rowland to third.
"I will keep this weekend in my memories," said Sainz Jr. "Spa is one of my favourite circuits and one of the greatest. Today, the team played a huge part in the win. We improved our pace in qualifying, then we put in a perfect pit stop although Oliver Rowland seemed to be faster in the race. The overall outcome from the weekend is perfect, but it could all be different in Moscow."
Behind, Arden's Pierre Gasly finished right on the tail of Rowland in P4, with Norman Nato seven or so seconds back in fifth.
Jazeman Jaafar and Matias Laine were sixth and seventh, while behind Stanaway, Meindert van Buuren, Marco Sorensen, Marlon Stockinger and Will Buller filled positions 9 through to 12.
In the Championship standings, Sainz Jr now has 124 points, 43 ahead of Gasly. Rowland is third – seven points further back – with Stevens fourth on 68 and Nato and Jaafar joint fifth on 46.
The Formula Renault 3.5 Series now moves to the Moscow Raceway in Russia next with that event taking place at the end of the month.
