The World Motor Sport Council has confirmed the 2011 FIA World Touring Car Championship calendar following a meeting in Paris today and twelve events have been scheduled, with Argentina and China joining the fold. The addition of Argentina and China comes at the expense of Belgium and Mexico, the latter event cancelled earlier this year due to heavy flooding.
The season will again begin in March in Brazil, before concluding at the end of November with the final round in Macau. Argentina will host its event on April 3, two weeks after the opener in Curitiba, while China will hold the penultimate round on November 5.
Other changes see Morocco moved from May to June, the meetings in Brno and Oscherleben brought forward to June and July respectively, while Portugal’s race returns to Porto and Japan switches venues from Okayama to Suzuka.
Meanwhile, in a separate, but related development, the WMSC added that current engines will be allowed for another year in the WTCC.
“The Super 2000 cars / 2011 Appendix J, i.e. powered by 1.6 litre turbo engines, are accepted in addition to Super 2000 cars, Diesel 2000 cars in conformity with 2010 Appendix J and so-called national cars,” it was confirmed.
