Citroën confirms '14 WTCC entry with Loeb
25 June 2013 – Citroën has confirmed the long-awaited news that it will contest the 2014 World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) with nine-time World Rally Champion (WRC) Sébastien Loeb, who is currently racing on a full-time basis in the FIA GT Series.
The marque, which has claimed eight WRC Constructors' titles since 2003, first tested its new WTCC contender at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in February, with Loeb assessing a prototype car based on the successful Citroën DS3 WRC model.
"I'm proud to confirm that Citroën will compete in the 2014 FIA World Touring Car Championship with Sébastien," explained Citroën Managing Director Frédéric Banzet, speaking at the brand's Versailles headquarters. "It is a new challenge for Sébastien, our driver for more than ten years. We wanted to continue our story together."
"It is also a new challenge for the people at Citroën, who will have to discover a new discipline and build a new car. Citroën wanted to remain in international motorsport, and with our WTCC programme we are able to reduce our motorsport budget."
Citroën added that its WTCC entry will have no bearing on its WRC efforts.
