Tyre wear still a concern for Neal
2 April 2011 – Matt Neal was delighted with his qualifying lap that secured pole position for the opening race of the 2011 British Touring Car Championship which takes place at Brands Hatch on Sunday, but the 44-year-old has reiterated his belief that the Honda Racing Team will suffer more severely with tyre wear compared to its rivals.
“What a start and we’ve probably even surprised ourselves with that gap,” Neal explained after the first qualifying session of the new season.
“But the race will be different - we can’t sustain that pace every lap and all the turbo runners are expecting to suffer greater tyre wear over the second half of the race whereas Jason is not too far away. He’ll come on really strong as the race progresses so starting ahead of him in particular is exactly where I need to be.”
