Aitken takes maiden GP3 victory at Spa
28 August 2016 – Renault youngster Jack Aitken secured his maiden GP3 victory during a race punctuated by Safety Car periods at Spa-Francorchamps.
Aitken started from fourth on the grid but moved up to third into La Source, before passing Santino Ferrucci along the Kemmel Straight.
Aitken shadowed pole-man Matevos Isaakyan across the remainder of the lap and cruised past his Koiranen rival along Kemmel next time around.
From there, Aitken retained his cool during three Safety Car periods, the first caused by Konstantin Tereschenko, who spun off at Fagnes.
Contact between Jake Hughes and Matt Parry caused the second Safety Car period, while an almost-identical accident soon after between Nirei Fukuzumi and Kevin Jörg neutralised proceedings once more.
Antonio Fuoco moved past both Ferrucci and Isaakyan to secure second, while the Haas development driver netted his first podium in third spot.
Isaakyan put up a spirited defence against series leader Charles Leclerc, with the Ferrari protégé having to take evasive action on the last lap at Bus Stop.
Leclerc's wide moment enabled Jake Dennis to climb into fifth, with Leclerc sixth, as Steijn Schothorst and Nyck de Vries rounded out the points scorers.
The next round of the GP3 season takes place at Monza from September 2-4
