Russell nets GP3 pole to ensure ART sweep
24 November 2017 – GP3 Champion George Russell claimed pole position for the final round of the campaign with a superb late effort in hot and sunny conditions at the Yas Marina Circuit.
Russell, fresh from his Formula 1 practice run with Force India, duelled with Macau Grand Prix winner Dan Ticktum for honours for much of the session.
Ticktum emerged on top after the first runs before Russell pulled clear, only for Arden pair Leonardo Pulcini and Niko Kari to move to the front.
However, Russell surged clear on his last lap, recording a 1:54.751, 0.322s clear of Pulcini, to take his fourth pole of the campaign, ensuring ART headed all of this year's eight qualifying sessions.
Pulcini and Kari would up second and third, with Ticktum fourth for DAMS, in front of Jenzer's Arjun Maini.
Aside from Russell, series powerhouse ART struggled, despite its 2017 sweep, with Honda-backed Nirei Fukuzumi only sixth, and Anthoine Hubert a lowly ninth.
Jack Aitken, meanwhile, was able to muster only 15th, over a second slower than team-mate Russell.
Trident's Dorian Boccolacci and Campos' Raoul Hyman split ART pair Fukuzumi and Hubert, as Alessio Lorandi rounded out the top 10 for Jenzer.
Saturday's 18-lap Feature Race will begin at 12:25 local time
