Rosberg: Mercedes can topple Red Bull
6 November 2013 – Nico Rosberg has said he is not concerned by Red Bull's current dominance and is convinced Mercedes can mount a proper challenge next year.
Rosberg was 'best of the rest' in Abu Dhabi last weekend, and while he was unable to take the fight to eventual winner, Sebastian Vettel, he did keep Vettel’s team-mate, Mark Webber honest, finishing just 2.8 seconds back in P3 at the flag.
Asked if he is worried by Red Bull's advantage and if Mercedes will be able to find the two seconds needed to catch them in 2014, even with the big rule changes, he replied: “I don’t think it’s two seconds at the moment, I think it’s less than that. OK, maybe at times it was on Sunday in Abu Dhabi, but anyway, I’m not worried, no.
“It [the new rules] is a great opportunity because it puts everybody back to zero, so on the contrary, it’s actually better this way. Everybody starts from zero.
“We have such a strong team now, it’s been built up over the last four years, they already did a fantastic job last winter from 1.5s a lap slower.
“At the beginning of this season we were sometimes the quickest car without a regulation change, so they did an amazing job last winter and I’m confident that they can do it again, for sure.
“And again this year, OK, we had some weaknesses which we’ve learned from and are trying to continue improving. I’m very sure we can have a good season [in 2014],” he summed-up.
