Valsecchi: Lotus decision a huge blow
15 November 2013 – Lotus reserve Davide Valsecchi has described as "a huge blow" the team's decision to hire Heikki Kovalainen as Kimi Räikkönen's replacement for the final two races.
The former GP2 Champion says although he would have accepted being overlooked in favour of Sauber's Nico Hülkenberg or Williams' Pastor Maldonado, who are both candidates for a full-time seat in 2014, the signing of Kovalainen has "angered" him.
"It's a huge blow," Valsecchi told Italian media in Austin. "From the sporting point of view it's a tragedy. It makes me angry to have lost the battle with Kovalainen who is not a great champion, not even an active driver – his last results were five years ago.
"If the team had taken Hülkenberg I could have understood, even Maldonado, but this… I was sure that from the point of view of motivation and desire to achieve [results], the team would have taken me and I would have been right up there."
Valsecchi added his frustration over the lack of track time available to reserve drivers, having been restricted to limited Young Driver Test and pre-season running this year.
"Maybe I lack experience but what chance do you have to gain any?" he said. "Still, things change quickly in F1, so I won't give up and I will be ready if needed in Brazil."
