Magnussen surprised by grip in DTM test
5 December 2015 – Former McLaren Formula 1 driver Kevin Magnussen says he was surprised by the amount of grip available after testing the Mercedes-AMG C63 DTM car at Jerez earlier this week.
Magnussen, who raced for McLaren in 2014, was demoted to the role of reserve driver this year, but the team opted not to retain his services for 2016, amid a lack of opportunities.
Magnussen tested Porsche's 919 Hybrid last month, though the brand has no seats at its LMP1 outfit, and has now sampled the C63, with which Pascal Wehrlein claimed the DTM title in 2015.
"It was a really good day, and the test was a lot of fun," Magnussen said.
"The DTM is a completely new experience for me. So far, I've always driven single-seaters. The car has very high downforce and much more grip than you would expect.
"I can imagine that racing in one of these cars is really enjoyable."
Magnussen was joined at the test by Sauber reserve Raffaele Marciello, youngsters Marvin Kirchhöfer, Jazeman Jaafar and Mikkel Jensen, along with former DTM racer Maro Engel.
