GPU readers tip Alonso to switch to US
14 June 2017 – GPUpdate.net readers have tipped Fernando Alonso to leave Formula 1 and continue his career in the United States in 2018, amid McLaren-Honda's troubles.
In the latest reader poll, (Where will Alonso race in 2018?), 30 per cent of voters felt that Alonso would make the switch to the US, after his Indianapolis 500 run.
Alonso, in a Honda-powered McLaren entry, run by Andretti, proved competitive throughout the month of May, running up front in the race before a late engine failure.
Alonso himself has not ruled out a full-time drive in IndyCar next year, covering the subject when he dialled into NBC's coverage of last weekend's Texas round.
"Why not? I'm very open to anything," said Alonso.
"I would be lying if I told you I know what would happen next year."
Conversely, 26 per cent of voters backed Alonso to stay at McLaren for a fourth season, amid growing anticipation of a Honda split and return to Mercedes power.
Only 12 per cent reckon he will return to Ferrari (Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen), and 13 per cent reckon he will join Mercedes (Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas).
However, 19 per cent feel a move to another F1 team could be possible; former outfit Renault has been investing heavily to rebuild its once mighty works effort.
