McLaren formally confirms Vandoorne for 2018
23 August 2017 – McLaren has formally confirmed that Stoffel Vandoorne will continue with the team in 2018, as planned.
Vandoorne stepped up to a full-time race seat with the squad for 2017, after previous success in junior categories, and has taken a best finish of 10th, which he achieved at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
He initially came under scrutiny, as he got up to speed in the top echelon, but ahead of his home event in Belgium this weekend, McLaren duly confirmed that he will race on in 2018.
"I'm delighted that the team has now formally announced that I will continue to race for them next year," said Vandoorne.
"I'll be able to approach the second half of my rookie season with total focus on the job in hand: namely getting the very most I can out of my car, my engineers, and everything and everyone around me.
"I've already learned such a huge amount in the first half of my first season in Formula 1.
"[I have learned] from my engineers, from my mechanics, from Eric [Boullier], from Zak [Brown] and from Jonathan [Neale], and also from Fernando [Alonso], who is a brilliant driver and also an excellent team-mate."
Alonso's future at McLaren remains uncertain, with the Spaniard indicating that he will make a decision in September or October.
