GPUpdate readers expect Mexico decider
16 October 2017 – GPUpdate.net readers expect the 2017 Formula 1 title to be settled at next weekend's Mexican Grand Prix, with two rounds to spare.
Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton has his first opportunity to wrap up a fourth world title at the upcoming United States Grand Prix, where he clinched his 2015 crown, having established a 59-point lead over Sebastian Vettel.
Hamilton needs to win, with Vettel sixth or lower, or place second, and hope Vettel is ninth or lower, in order to build an insurmountable 75-point advantage atop the standings.
Only 21 per cent of polled readers believe that such a scenario will unfold, while 42 per cent expect Hamilton to secure the crown a week later in Mexico, when a 50-point gap would be sufficient.
23 per cent believe the title will be decide at the penultimate round in Brazil, host to dramatic showdowns in 2008 and 2012, when Hamilton and Vettel won their first and third titles respectively.
Just 14 per cent of polled readers reckon Hamilton and Vettel, who led the standings through until the Italian Grand Prix, will fight for the title at the final round of the campaign in Abu Dhabi next month.
In order for such a scenario to unfold, Vettel needs to out-score Hamilton by 34 points across the next three events, to ensure he is within 25 heading to the Yas Marina Circuit.
