Alonso confirmed at McLaren for 2018
19 October 2017 – Fernando Alonso will continue to race for McLaren in Formula 1 next year, the parties confirmed on Thursday, ahead of the United States Grand Prix, bringing speculation over his future to an end.
Alonso rejoined McLaren on a three-year deal in 2015, for the start of the outfit's latest partnership with power unit supplier Honda, which returned to the sport after an absence.
However, ambitions to rekindle the title-winning partnership of the late 1980s/early 1990s went unfulfilled, largely due to a lack of reliability and performance from Honda's power units.
Alonso stressed throughout this year that securing a winning car in 2018 was his target, and emphasised that Formula 1 was his "first and only priority", while also retaining his Triple Crown ambitions.
McLaren announced last month that it would split from Honda and align itself with Renault for 2018, but Alonso explained that he was still weighing up his options.
Alonso's alternatives at front-running teams, though, appeared restricted, with Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull all locking down their current line-ups for another campaign.
It was duly confirmed on Thursday that Alonso will stay with McLaren for 2018, when it switches to Renault power, alongside current team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne.
"It's fantastic to be able to continue my relationship with everybody at McLaren," said Alonso.
"It was always where my heart was telling me to stay, and I really feel at home here.
"This is a fantastic team, full of incredible people, with a warmth and friendliness that I've never experienced elsewhere in Formula 1. I'm incredibly happy to be racing here.
"Just as important, McLaren has the technical resource and financial strength to be able to very quickly win races and world championships in F1.
"Although the last few years have not been easy, we have never forgotten how to win, and I believe we can achieve that again soon.
"The last three years have given us the momentum to plan and build for the future, and I'm looking forward to that journey.
"I'm excited for our future together – and I'm already working hard to make it a success."
