Hamilton remains on top in second practice
20 October 2017 – Lewis Hamilton remained at the top of the timesheets during Friday afternoon's second practice session for the United States Grand Prix, posting the fastest ever lap around the Circuit of the Americas.
Hamilton, having led a wet/dry FP1, produced a time of 1:34.568 on the Ultra Soft tyre compound, eclipsing his pole position effort from last year, and setting a new overall record.
Hamilton's nearest rival was Max Verstappen, who finished four-tenths adrift, but would have been closer without a wild moment at the penultimate corner.
Sebastian Vettel, 59 points behind Hamilton in the title race, placed third, meaning three different teams (Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari) filled the top three positions.
Vettel's session was far from smooth, though, as he took a trip through the gravel at Turn 19 and later reported that the front of his car "felt like jelly".
Valtteri Bottas, Daniel Ricciardo and Kimi Räikkönen were all significantly slower than their team-mates, occupying fourth through sixth.
Fernando Alonso put his McLaren-Honda seventh, ahead of Williams' Felipe Massa, as Force India drivers Sergio Pérez and Esteban Ocon rounded out the top 10.
Renault pair Carlos Sainz Jr. and Nico Hülkenberg switched to Ultra Softs later than their rivals en route to 11th and 12th respectively, separated by just five thousandths.
After another FP1 run for Sean Gelael, Daniil Kvyat completed his first laps in Formula 1 machinery since the Singapore Grand Prix, placing 13th overall.
He finished over a second quicker than debuting Toro Rosso team-mate Brendon Hartley, who led the mileage charts with a focus on longer running.
Haas' Kevin Magnussen took 14th, after squabbling for track position with Haas team-mate Romain Grosjean, followed by McLaren's Stoffel Vandoorne and Williams rookie Lance Stroll.
Sauber pair Pascal Wehrlein and Marcus Ericsson wound up 18th and 19th, in front of only Grosjean, whose best time came on Super Softs, rather than Ultra Softs.
Saturday's final practice session will begin at 11:00 local time
