Vandoorne gets additional 25-place drop
22 October 2017 – Stoffel Vandoorne is set to incur an additional 25-place grid penalty for taking on new power unit components, after Honda detected an issue with his MGU-H ahead of the United States Grand Prix.
Vandoorne entered the weekend scheduled to take a five-place sanction, due to using an eighth Internal Combustion Engine, which Honda classed as Spec 3.8.
Vandoorne qualified in 13th position, with the array of penalties elsewhere meaning he was set to line-up from 14th on the grid, minimising the impact of his demotion.
However, ahead of Sunday's Grand Prix, McLaren has been forced to change his power unit.
Vandoorne has taken on an 11th MGU-H, 11th Turbocharger, ninth ICE and eighth MGU-K; as it is the first time this year an 11th engine part has been used, this incurs a 10-place drop.
For the remaining parts, a five-place sanction is issued, bringing his cumulative total to 30, meaning he is set to start from the back of the grid.
Vandoorne is still using Honda's Spec 3.8 unit.
