Renault fined for Sainz Jr. unsafe release
26 November 2017 – Renault has been issued with a €5,000 fine for releasing Carlos Sainz Jr.'s car in an unsafe condition during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Sainz Jr., who was in contention for points, extended his first stint before coming in for his sole service, though Renault did not secure his front-left wheel.
Sainz Jr. went wide at pit exit, almost hitting the barriers, before bringing his car to a safe halt at Turn 3.
Stewards noted that "Sainz Jr. did everything possible to stop at the first safe location, without impeding other drivers and such that the marshals could recover the car without affecting the race".
It was also noted that, as an in-race penalty could not be served due to his retirement, the stewards opted to issue the fine of €5,000.
Despite its error with Sainz Jr., Renault leapt ahead of Toro Rosso in the battle for sixth place in the standings, courtesy of Nico Hülkenberg finishing the race itself in sixth.
