Ocon 'ran out of laps' to catch Pérez
28 November 2017 – Esteban Ocon says he ran out of laps to catch Force India team-mate Sergio Pérez as the pair took seventh and eighth during a processional Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Ocon briefly jumped Renault's Nico Hülkenberg off the line but the German moved back ahead through Turn 1, leaving the Frenchman in the ninth position in which he qualified.
Ocon profited from Daniel Ricciardo's hydraulics failure to move into eighth and completed 31 laps on Ultra Softs, running 15 laps longer than Pérez.
Ocon, though, was unable to sufficiently hunt down Pérez, despite the advantage of fresher Super Softs, and came home eighth, ensuring he finished his first full campaign with 87 points.
"It was a really quiet race, except the start, with not a huge amount of things happening," said Ocon.
"The start was the busy moment when I almost got ahead of Hulkenberg, but he was on the racing line and he was able to brake later.
"From there I was running a different strategy compared to Checo and although I was getting closer to him at the end, I just didn't have enough laps to catch him, because I had fresher tyres.
"It's nice to end the year with another strong result and I'm really proud of what we have achieved as a team this year.
"The winter months ahead will involve a lot of training so that I can come back even stronger in 2018."
Ocon finished the year eighth in the standings, one place and 13 points behind Pérez.
