Tost: Kvyat deserves to be in Formula 1
11 December 2017 – Toro Rosso team boss Franz Tost says that Daniil Kvyat "deserves" to be in Formula 1, despite recent setbacks, and hopes to see him join another team in the future.
Kvyat stepped up to Formula 1 with Toro Rosso in 2014, and graduated to Red Bull for the 2015 season, following Sebastian Vettel's surprise decision to join Ferrari.
Kvyat, though, was demoted to Toro Rosso after four rounds in 2016, and then rested after this year's Singapore Grand Prix, having scored just eight points in his second spell at the junior team.
He returned for the United States Grand Prix, as Carlos Sainz Jr. made an early switch to Renault, and Pierre Gasly focused on Super Formula, taking a point in 10th.
However, he was then dropped from Red Bull's programme altogether, casting serious doubt over his Formula 1 future, with only one seat left on the 2018 grid, at Williams.
Despite the demotions, Tost is adamant that Kvyat has the pace to compete in the top echelon, and reckons he can show is potential again if given a chance by a rival team.
"I am still convinced that Daniil has a very high natural speed," Tost told the official Formula 1 website.
"He was sometimes even faster than Daniel Riccardo, but somehow last year and this year he couldn't show the potential that is within him.
"He was involved in many incidents – but in his defence I also have to say that he had many reliability issues and that didn't help build up confidence.
"Being the victim of too many incidents killed the performance he would have been able to show.
"Maybe a short break – to get organised again – and probably we will see Daniil back at his usual performance level with another team."
Asked what Kvyat's issue was, Tost added: "Sometimes he was too aggressive at the beginning of the race. The first corner was his weak point.
"He wanted too much in the first hundred metres – success by any means! That puts you under pressure – unnecessary pressure – and that never works.
"I hope for him that he gets another chance, as I think he deserves to be in F1."
Kvyat recently tested NASCAR Euro Series machinery in Italy, an outing that was arranged "for fun", as he assesses his options for 2018.
