Norris takes title lead after Zandvoort double
21 August 2017 – McLaren-backed Lando Norris moved into the lead of the European Formula 3 Championship with a commanding performance at Zandvoort, taking two wins and a third-placed finish.
Carlin's Norris claimed pole position for all three races around the tight and twisty Dutch circuit, and cruised to victory in the opening and closing encounters.
However, his hopes of completing a clean sweep were dashed by a grid penalty for the second race, after stewards deemed that he had not sufficiently slowed for yellow flags.
As a result, Norris lost pole for Race 2 and was demoted to third spot on the grid, behind Callum Ilott and Jake Hughes.
Prema's Ilott duly streaked clear to register victory, ahead of Hughes and Norris, for his fourth triumph of the campaign.
Norris' sixth and seventh wins of 2017, alongside his podium, enabled him to leap ahead of Maximilian Günther in the standings to the tune of 11 points.
Günther finished third, seventh, and third across the three races as he sported a revised BWT-livery on his Prema-run machine.
Joel Eriksson was runner-up to Norris in the opening race but dismal one-lap efforts compromised the remainder of the weekend, limiting him to a lowly 12th in Races 2 and 3.
As a result, Eriksson has slipped 55 points behind Norris in the standings, meaning he faces an uphill battle to remain in title contention.
Ferdinand Habsburg built on his maiden win at Spa-Francorchamps by completing a Carlin 1-2 in the final race, having earlier grabbed a pair of top-six finishes.
1. Lando Norris - 313 points
2. Maximilian Günther - 302 points
3. Joel Eriksson - 258 points
The next round of the season will take place at the Nürburgring on September 9-10
