Ilott converts pole into victory in Austria
23 September 2017 – Prema's Callum Ilott took his fifth victory of the European Formula 3 season with a lights-to-flag drive in the opening race of the weekend at the Red Bull Ring.
Pole-sitter Ilott was initially challenged by the fast-starting Joel Eriksson but kept his Motopark rival at bay and controlled the remainder of proceedings to finish 1.8 seconds clear.
Maximilian Günther lost out to Eriksson on the opening lap and preserved third throughout to edge a couple of points closer to title leader Lando Norris, who placed fourth.
Norris challenged Günther at the start but slipped behind Tadasuke Makino through Turn 3 and spent the bulk of the rest of the race behind the Honda protégé.
Makino locked up into Turn 3 on the penultimate lap and presented Norris with an opportunity, with the McLaren youngster completing a move into Turn 7, having briefly run on the grass in his pursuit of fourth.
Norris, who entered the race with a 73-point advantage, now holds a 70-point lead over Prema rival Günther, with Ilott and Eriksson still in mathematical contention
Ferdinand Habsburg claimed sixth position, in front of Mick Schumacher and David Beckmann, the trio profiting from Harrison Newey colliding with Nikita Mazepin under braking for Turn 3.
Guan Yu Zhou and Pedro Piquet rounded out the top 10.
1. Lando Norris - 393 points
2. Maximilian Günther - 323 points
3. Callum Ilott - 285 points
Sunday's second race will begin at 11:00 local time
