Ticktum 'couldn't believe' Macau outcome
19 November 2017 – Daniel Ticktum revelled in victory at the Macau Grand Prix as he surged forwards from eighth on the grid to triumph at the prestigious event.
Red Bull junior Ticktum picked off Pedro Piquet at the start before profiting when leaders Joel Eriksson and Callum Ilott came to blows during the early laps, moving up to fifth spot.
Ticktum was embroiled in a fierce fight for third and captured the position on the penultimate lap when he went around the outside of both Maximilian Günther and Lando Norris into Lisboa.
Sérgio Sette Câmara and Ferdinand Habsburg battled for victory but both suffered separate offs at the final corner on the last lap, as they duelled for position through R. Bend.
Ticktum consequently picked his way through the debris to record victory and admitted being in shock at the outcome of the race, which was only his third meeting in the Formula 3 division.
"I got up to fifth but I coming to the end of the race I knew that I was going to have to do something special if I was going to get a decent result," said the Motopark driver.
"I was watching Lando as he was going after Max and just put myself in the position to make something of it if I could.
"I'm pretty confident on the brakes and I have a marker for where my last place to brake is and I kept that in the peripheral as I went alongside.
"I braked, if I'd had to go any deeper I would have been in trouble but it was enough.
"I thought, OK, the podium is not bad but then I couldn't believe the last corner, one into the wall going in and then as I came out there was another.
"I just couldn't believe it as I crossed the line, what a race."
Ticktum concluded: "Some people might say that the win is a bit lucky but I've got to say that I deserved it because of my pace through the weekend.
"Then there was that overtake, that was the move that did it for me."
