Prema signs Gelael for 2018 F2 campaign
20 November 2017 – Prema has confirmed that Sean Gelael will race for the team in next year's Formula 2 championship, the first driver signed up to compete in the series in 2018.
Gelael, following two years in European Formula 3, stepped up to the series under its GP2 guise in 2015, and secured a podium in last season's Austrian Feature Race, placing 15th overall.
Gelael switched from Campos to Arden for 2017 and again holds 15th in the standings, having also made his Formula 1 debut for Toro Rosso courtesy of test and practice runs.
Prema, meanwhile, stepped up to GP2 for 2016 and has provided the champion on both occasions, with current STR racer Pierre Gasly succeeded by Ferrari-backed Charles Leclerc.
"I'm proud to welcome Sean to our team," said Team Principal René Rosin.
"With his multifaceted experience, he will definitely be a key resource for the 2018 Formula 2 season as we will need to adapt to a brand-new car.
"In our first year in the series, we decided to field a mix of an experienced driver and a rookie, while this season we went for an all-rookie programme.
"In both cases, the results proved us right.
"For next year though, there will be a new factor in play and we will rely on experience to speed-up the development of the 2018 Dallara.
"Having raced and adapted himself to such diverse environments in the past, I'm sure that Sean will be able to meet his expectations and contribute to more success for the team."
Gelael will link up with Prema during next week's post-season test at the Yas Marina Circuit.
