Castroneves fastest on Fast Friday
22 May 2010 – Helio Castroneves, last year's winner of the Indianapolis 500, has topped the final practice session prior to qualifying at this year's event. The Brazilian Penske driver led the way on the timesheets from team-mate Will Power as Alex Tagliani's Fazzt entry made the top three.
It was Tony Kanaan who had been on top on Thursday although compatriot Castroneves, an ever-popular figure at the Speedway, led the way on Fast Friday courtesy of a best effort of 39.725 seconds, ahead of current IndyCar Series championship leader Power by just 22 thousandths of a second.
As Kanaan slipped to sixth, 2008 Champion Scott Dixon and Mario Moraes completed the top five behind Tagliani.
Once again, rain failed to stay away - causing several small delays - although the track remained dry for most of a day which featured few incidents.
Qualifying for the 2010 Indianapolis 500 will begin at 11am local time on Saturday (BST -5); the session will consist of two segments - the first will see grid positions 10 to 24 decided before the top nine progress to a new shootout and the remainder of the grid is then decided in Bump Day qualifying, which will be staged on Sunday
