Pigot replaces Hildebrand in full-time ECR seat
13 September 2017 – Ed Carpenter Racing has announced that Spencer Pigot will compete full-time for the team in IndyCar next year, in place of J.R. Hildebrand.
Pigot, 23, graduated to IndyCar on a three-race deal with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing in 2016 as part of his scholarship for taking the Indy Lights crown in 2015.
Once that deal came to an end, Pigot switched to ECR, and has competed on the road/street courses in the No. 20 car, with team boss Carpenter participating in the oval events.
For 2018, Pigot will switch to the No. 21 car, replacing Hildebrand, and contest all of the races.
"To say I am excited about 2018 would be an understatement," said Pigot.
"I have really enjoyed my time so far with Ed Carpenter Racing and this is the next step in what I hope is a long, successful partnership with the team in the IndyCar Series."
Carpenter praised Pigot's progress and is confident that the youngster can compete at the front in 2018.
"Spencer made significant strides from his rookie season into his sophomore year and we see much more potential in his ability," said Carpenter.
"Spencer has worked very hard to improve in all areas of his driving and we feel the time has come to give him a chance to compete for the championship.
"I look forward to his continued development and reaching the top step of the podium in 2018."
ECR has not yet confirmed who will replace Pigot in the No. 20 car on road/street course events next year, with Carpenter set to continue participating in the oval events.
Pigot, who took a best of seventh at Mid-Ohio in 2016, also made a one-off outing with new team Juncos at this year's Indianapolis 500, due to Carpenter's presence in the No. 20 car.
