Chilton excited by Carlin IndyCar project
13 December 2017 – Max Chilton believes that Carlin can emerge as a competitive force in IndyCar in 2018, after confirmation of the team's graduation to the series.
Carlin, following widespread success in European-based junior single-seater categories, opened an Indy Lights project in 2015, guiding Ed Jones to the 2016 crown.
It will step up to IndyCar to field former Ganassi racers Chilton and Charlie Kimball, with the former Formula 1 driver renewing his partnership with the team.
Chilton competed for Carlin in British Formula 3 and GP2, en route to Formula 1, and again in Indy Lights, prior to his Ganassi spell, and is confident over his and the team's prospects.
"The announcement brings so much joy to everyone involved in making this a reality," said Chilton, who competed in 35 Grands Prix with Marussia in 2013/14.
"Carlin being the first British team to enter the IndyCar Series in the modern era is a result of a lot of hard work and ambition following the team's move into American racing a few years ago.
"I am super excited for 2018 as Carlin is like family to me.
"Having raced with them on and off since 2009 and having had my most competitive years with the team, I know we can work toward great things.
"IndyCar is exceptionally competitive, but the introduction of the new aero package will help level the playing field slightly.
"I know that finding the maximum in a spec series like this is where Carlin really excels."
Kimball, meanwhile, competed for Carlin during his European single-seater days in the mid-2000s, and returns to the squad after spending seven years with Ganassi.
"[Carlin] was a big part of launching my career when I raced in Europe and we had a lot of success together back in 2005 in British F3," he said.
"It seems like everything fell into place at the right time to have this opportunity to work with Trevor and the whole Carlin team again.
"I've already got two years of experience working with Max as a team-mate and I think our strengths and weaknesses will really complement each other as we begin this new adventure."
