Viñales comfortably quickest in FP1
21 April 2017 – MotoGP championship leader Maverick Viñales comfortably set the pace during Friday's first practice session for the Grand Prix of the Americas in Austin.
Under dark clouds, but with no rain falling, Yamaha rider Viñales clocked a time of 2:04.923, over half a second quicker than Repsol Honda's Marc Márquez.
Andrea Dovizioso put his factory Ducati third, while Johann Zarco (Tech 3 Yamaha) and Álvaro Bautista (Aspar Ducati) were the final riders within a second of Viñales.
Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa took sixth and seventh, around half a second off team-mates Dovizioso and Márquez, the latter unbeaten at the Circuit of the Americas.
Valentino Rossi again trailed Viñales by a sizeable margin, despite his late Soft/Soft run, as Aleix Espargaró (Aprilia) and Danilo Petrucci (Pramac Ducati) completed the top 10.
LCR Honda's Cal Crutchlow wound up 11th, after crashing at Turn 6.
KTM again featured at the back, Pol Espargaró ending up 21st out of 23 riders, after a huge snap under braking for Turn 12, with team-mate Bradley Smith last.
Friday's second practice session in Austin will begin at 14:05 local time
