Abraham gets new Aspar deal for 2018
21 August 2017 – Karel Abraham will remain with Aspar through 2018, having performed "much better" than the team expected on his MotoGP comeback.
Abraham initially raced in MotoGP from 2011 to 2015, representing his father's AB Motoracing outfit, but switched to the Superbike World Championship when it dropped off the grid.
After just one season in WSBK, he returned to MotoGP with the Pull&Bear-backed Aspar Team, matching his best ever result of seventh at this year's Dutch TT.
With six further points finishes to his name, Abraham has secured a fresh deal for next season, continuing alongside the already confirmed Álvaro Bautista.
"When we signed him last year we felt he could do a good job but the results he has achieved have been a very positive surprise," said General Manager Jorge Martínez.
"He has done much better than we expected, right from pre-season, and as the races have gone by he has continued to improve and achieve great results.
"We think we can continue to improve with him in the future.
"It is a simple choice, he is happy with the team and we are happy with him, so we are going to continue in the same way and chase even bigger goals."
Abraham also expressed satisfaction at the agreement, but stressed that he is fully focused on adding to the results he has achieved so far this season.
"I am very happy to have re-signed with the Aspar Team and to continue with the same group of people is very important to me," commented the Czech rider.
"I am very happy, I am already looking forward to a new challenge next season, but right now I need to concentrate on the rest of this season, which is the most important.
"As I said, I am very happy, but we have to focus on the here and now."
