Van der Mark gets Sepang Tech 3 call-up
22 October 2017 – World Superbike rider Michael van der Mark has been drafted in by Tech 3 for his MotoGP debut at next weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix.
Van der Mark, who competes for Yamaha in WSBK, was called up to replace Valentino Rossi at Aragón, but was ultimately not used as the Italian persevered with his broken leg.
Van der Mark, however, has now been handed an opportunity by Tech 3, with Jonas Folger currently ruled out of action through illness.
"It goes without saying that I am really excited," said Van der Mark, who holds sixth place in this year's WSBK standings.
"I came quite close to getting the opportunity to ride a MotoGP bike a few weeks ago, but it didn't work out.
"Then [Tech 3 boss] Hervé [Poncharal] called, and although I will have a busy schedule, I could not say no to this chance.
"I am very happy and I look forward to this adventure. Luckily, I know Sepang, but the MotoGP riders have done a lot of tests there this year, so everyone will be fast.
"However, I just want to enjoy this weekend, to improve myself and see how it is to ride the YZR-M1."
Tech 3 used Kohta Nozane in Japan, while Broc Parkes replaced Folger in Australia.
