Iannone quickest in first Valencia session
10 November 2017 – Suzuki's Andrea Iannone led the way during the opening practice session for the final round of the MotoGP season at Valencia's Ricardo Tormo Circuit.
Iannone clocked two laps quick enough for top spot in cool and sunny conditions on Friday morning, the fastest a 1:31.045, set on the Soft tyres.
Iannone finished 0.312s clear of Marc VDS rider Jack Miller, who put in a sequence of quick times before he crashed under braking for Turn 6, low-siding out of the session.
Pol Espargaró put KTM in a fine third place, ahead of title contenders Andrea Dovizioso and Marc Márquez.
Dovizioso must win Sunday's race in order to stand a chance of taking the championship, while Márquez needs only five points to claim his fourth premier class title.
Maverick Viñales was the lead Yamaha rider in sixth position, albeit seven-tenths off Iannone's pace, in front of Tech 3's Johann Zarco and LCR Honda's Cal Crutchlow.
KTM test rider Mika Kallio finished ninth, on his fourth wildcard outing of the campaign, while Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa rounded out the top 10.
Ducati tester Michele Pirro edged regular racer Jorge Lorenzo for 12th, ahead of Danilo Petrucci (Pramac) and Álvaro Bautista, the latter crashing out through Turn 2.
Valentino Rossi was a low-key 18th, of the 25 runners, finishing the session 1.4s off Iannone's pace.
Friday's second 45-minute practice session will begin at 14:05 local time
