Kallio cleared for five 2018 wildcard entries
5 December 2017 – Mika Kallio has been cleared to make five wildcard outings with KTM during the 2018 season, following the latest meeting of the Grand Prix Commission.
Kallio, 35, competed in the premier class with Pramac and Ducati in 2009/10, before returning to Moto2, where he finished as runner-up to Tito Rabat in 2014.
Kallio went on to join KTM's MotoGP project in 2015 as a test rider, and this year contested four races.
He targeted a full-time return to 2018, but KTM stuck with Bradley Smith, backing him to recover from his struggles, alongside Pol Espargaró.
KTM indicated that Kallio would make further wildcard outings next season and a request to run him at Jerez, Catalunya, the Sachsenring, Spielberg and Aragón has been approved.
Meanwhile, teams using machines from manufacturers with concessions now have the right to six wildcard entries per season, as opposed to only three.
If a manufacturer loses its concessions, this right will not be revoked until the following season.
